Proper Hand Position for Writing

Pictured are some examples of the hand position we use for writing. It is important that the students hold their pencils this way when doing any writing.

Place the pencil between the thumb and middle finger (we tell the students to find their longest finger), just above the bare wood of the pencil. The pencil then lays on the bottom knuckle of the pointer finger. The pointer finger just rests, slightly curled, on top of the pencil. The fourth and pinky fingers curl around and rest on the paper while writing. If the child holds up their hand they should be able to see through the circle that is created with the hand. If they can't they may be flattening it.
